Wall Street Extends Its Rally

Wall Street extended its rally in early trading Thursday after a $2 billion capital infusion into Countrywide Financial Corp. relieved investors concerned about widening credit problems.
Bank of America Corp. announced late Wednesday it will invest the money into the nation's largest mortgage lender to help it better weather problems with defaulting subprime loans. The investment was seen as a way to not only prop up Countrywide, but also prevent any further losses at the mortgage lender from hurting the underlying economy.
The move was reaassuring to investors, although a number of major banks and home lenders continue to face difficulties. On Wednesday, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. said it would close its BNC Mortgage unit and slash 1,200 jobs; HSBC Holdings PLC and Accredited Home Lenders Holding Co. also said they would eliminate jobs.

Warren Buffett May Buy Stake in Countrywide (CFC)

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett may buy parts of beleaguered mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp (NYSE:CFC - News), some investors are speculating, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Countrywide's debt-servicing business and its portfolio of mortgages and mortgage-backed securities may be attractive to Buffett, the Journal reported on its Web site on Monday, citing unnamed investors.
Like many mortgage lenders, Countrywide has struggled with rising delinquencies and foreclosures, and an unwillingness among bankers to extend credit, and among investors to buy the loans it makes.
Countrywide, which is being closely monitored by U.S. regulators, sought to reassure investors earlier on Monday that it is safe to do business with the company.
Buffett has been increasing his stake in financial services companies, including those with significant exposure to the mortgage market.
Earlier this month, Buffett's investment company Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:BRK-A - News; NYSE:BRK-B - News) disclosed an investment in Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC - News), one of the six largest U.S. mortgage lenders, in a regulatory filing.
Berkshire is also a long-time shareholder in Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE:WFC - News), the second largest U.S. mortgage lender after Countrywide.
Wells Fargo has largely been spared the subprime mortgage-related woes afflicting smaller rivals, helped by its conservative underwriting standards.
Buffett told TV network CNBC last week that the worsening credit and housing markets may present some "real" investment opportunities.
Berkshire officials were not immediately available for comment. Buffett does not discuss what Berkshire is presently buying and selling.

Countrywide Financial Corp. (CFC) Rallies After Fed Cut

Shares of Countrywide Financial Corp. leaped higher after the Federal Reserve cut a key interest rate early Friday that will make it easier for the struggling mortgage lender to raise cash.
The Federal Reserve slashed the discount rate -- or the interest rate the Fed charges commercial banks for loans -- to 5.75 percent from 6.25 percent, making cheaper financing available to a company with cash sources that have been quickly drying up.
Shares of Countrywide rose $1.98, or 10.5 percent, to $20.93 in morning trading after losing 13 percent Thursday. Shares are still down almost 50 percent for the year. Just two weeks ago, Countrywide said it had nearly $50 billion in readily accessible cash, but the Calabasas, Calif., lender said Thursday it had borrowed $11.5 billion from a syndicate of 40 banks.
Investors have been nervous that the nation's biggest mortgage lender needs to borrow from banks. Banks charge higher interest rates and require more restrictive conditions than Countrywide's other financing sources, which include mortgage-backed bonds, commercial paper and warehouse financing.
Lehman Brothers analyst Bruce Harting wrote in a research report that Countrywide is the beneficiary of the Fed injecting more liquidity into the economy. He said that other stocks rallying on this news include companies with liquidity trouble or mortgage exposure, such as Washington Mutual Inc. and Downey Financial Corp.
