Stocks Flat After Bank of America (BAC) Earnings

Wall Street pared its losses to trade flat Thursday, but remained uneasy as disappointing results from Bank of America Corp. provided further evidence that the credit crisis is hurting the economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average, down as much as 60 points earlier in the session, rebounded in afternoon trading to nearly positive territory as bargain hunters entered the market, betting Thursday's dismal data could convince the Federal Reserve to lower rates again.
Still, investors remained spooked after BofA -- considered a bellwether for the banking industry because it has branches across the country -- said "significant dislocations" in the capital markets sent third-quarter profits down 32 percent. Citigroup Inc. and Washington Mutual Inc. reported similar results in recent days.
Banks and brokerages have been hurt during the third quarter in the fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis. As people with weak credit defaulted on loans at an alarming rate, it triggered a global aversion for risk that led the credit markets to freeze up.
Treasurys rallied and the dollar fell to a new low against the euro after the Labor Department said the number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits shot up last week by the largest amount since February. The report was far worse than economists expected, and signaled that the labor market could be starting to weaken from a downturn in housing and the global credit turmoil.

Wall Street Extends Its Rally

Wall Street extended its rally in early trading Thursday after a $2 billion capital infusion into Countrywide Financial Corp. relieved investors concerned about widening credit problems.
Bank of America Corp. announced late Wednesday it will invest the money into the nation's largest mortgage lender to help it better weather problems with defaulting subprime loans. The investment was seen as a way to not only prop up Countrywide, but also prevent any further losses at the mortgage lender from hurting the underlying economy.
The move was reaassuring to investors, although a number of major banks and home lenders continue to face difficulties. On Wednesday, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. said it would close its BNC Mortgage unit and slash 1,200 jobs; HSBC Holdings PLC and Accredited Home Lenders Holding Co. also said they would eliminate jobs.

Warren Buffett May Buy Stake in Countrywide (CFC)

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett may buy parts of beleaguered mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp (NYSE:CFC - News), some investors are speculating, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Countrywide's debt-servicing business and its portfolio of mortgages and mortgage-backed securities may be attractive to Buffett, the Journal reported on its Web site on Monday, citing unnamed investors.
Like many mortgage lenders, Countrywide has struggled with rising delinquencies and foreclosures, and an unwillingness among bankers to extend credit, and among investors to buy the loans it makes.
Countrywide, which is being closely monitored by U.S. regulators, sought to reassure investors earlier on Monday that it is safe to do business with the company.
Buffett has been increasing his stake in financial services companies, including those with significant exposure to the mortgage market.
Earlier this month, Buffett's investment company Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:BRK-A - News; NYSE:BRK-B - News) disclosed an investment in Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC - News), one of the six largest U.S. mortgage lenders, in a regulatory filing.
Berkshire is also a long-time shareholder in Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE:WFC - News), the second largest U.S. mortgage lender after Countrywide.
Wells Fargo has largely been spared the subprime mortgage-related woes afflicting smaller rivals, helped by its conservative underwriting standards.
Buffett told TV network CNBC last week that the worsening credit and housing markets may present some "real" investment opportunities.
Berkshire officials were not immediately available for comment. Buffett does not discuss what Berkshire is presently buying and selling.

RBS Launches Hostile Bid for ABN Amro (ABN)

A consortium led by Royal Bank of Scotland PLC said Tuesday it will launch a hostile bid of 71.1 billion euros ($95.5 billion) for ABN Amro, topping a friendly offer from Barclays PLC and pressing Bank of America Corp. for control of the Dutch bank's U.S. arm.
The offer by the RBS group is for 38.40 euros ($51.59) per share of ABN Amro Holding NV, mostly in cash. It is at least 10 percent more than Barclays' all share offer worth 34.69 euros ($46.59) at current levels. ABN Amro's shares fell 0.6 percent to 35.87 euros ($48.19), suggesting serious investor doubts about which deal will prevail.
Either bid, if successful, would be the largest in the history of the financial industry.
